For centuries Appledore was an important shipbuilding centre with large, privately owned shipyards and today the quay is still dotted with traditional fishing boats, and modern day yachts and pleasure crafts, offering cruises up and down the estuary. A seasonal ferry takes passengers to the pretty little village of Instow, with its sheltered stretch of sandy beach, 17th century pier and cosmopolitan sailing club.
